Cyclone Melissa is projected to become a infrequent Category 5 cyclone as it turns towards the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening sudden floods and rock falls.

This weather system, which had wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean and is expected to reach land by early next week, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Warnings of blackouts and disruption to utilities have been announced as this storm produces up to 30 inches of rain and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," locals have been told.

The cyclone is the thirteenth storm in the current Atlantic season, which usually concludes in the eleventh month.

Category Five Hurricane Risk

A category five storm is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

The nation's leader the official commented: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage nervousness and any unease and worry is to be prepared."

Locals are being advised to secure their homes with protective bags and timber panels, and to stock up on necessary supplies.

Broader Consequences

Warnings are also active for regions of Haiti encompassing the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.

Landslides already being caused by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to emergency services.

Future Trajectory

Melissa is projected to move across Cuba by midweek before moving through the Greater Antilles and out into the open ocean.

By the time it reaches Cuba, it is anticipated to have reduced to a third-level storm.
