Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's legal representative filed the answer on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple causes including that his the accused, a critic of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to move forward against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative informed the judge they intended to present several motions to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to handle the legal matter.

James Comey's case was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his investigation into an additional opponent - the New York official - failed to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the court on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was supported by his wife, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the former government terminated.

Following the reading to the judge state his rights and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the proceedings.

Background Context

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about several months into the former president's first administration as president. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an probe into foreign election meddling and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, the director triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he misled the upper house by stating he had not approved a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to news outlets details about the government examinations.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, block and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

In a video Mr Comey shared to his Instagram after he was indicted, he said he was innocent and accused Trump of acting like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have known for years that there are consequences to challenging the former president," he said. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."

"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a trial."

The charges against James Comey emerged after Trump published on social media insisting on his attorney general, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and additional individuals.
