Substantial Online Disruption Affects Dozens Sites and Apps

A large-scale online failure has disrupted dozens sites and applications worldwide, as users noting troubles accessing the internet due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing system.

The disrupted services include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-operated platforms including its key e-commerce website and the Ring home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was impacted as well as its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, and further notifications of problems reaching the HM Revenue and Customs site on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring customers took to social media to complain their home gadgets were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of disruptions on particular applications totaled the thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the outage originated in the east coast of the United States at the cloud division, a division that offers essential internet infrastructure for many businesses, who lease space on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive online services system.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the America (8am BST), the company announced “increased error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the east coast of the US. The ripple effect was seen to disrupt apps worldwide, with the outage tracking website reporting outages with the identical platforms in various regions.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors internet outages, also reported a rise in issues on that morning, including several cases located in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the issues originated.
