Texas Attorney General Takes Legal Action Against Tylenol Producers Over Autism Spectrum Allegations

Judicial Case
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump seeking election to the United States Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding potential dangers of Tylenol

Texas Attorney General Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the producers of Tylenol, asserting the corporations hid safety concerns that the medication presented to children's brain development.

The lawsuit comes a month after Former President Trump advocated an unsubstantiated connection between consuming acetaminophen - alternatively called paracetamol - while pregnant and autism spectrum disorder in offspring.

The attorney general is filing suit against J&J, which previously sold the drug, the sole analgesic recommended for expectant mothers, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a declaration, he stated they "deceived the public by gaining financially from suffering and promoting medication ignoring the risks."

The manufacturer says there is no credible evidence tying Tylenol to autism.

"These companies misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to boost earnings," Paxton, from the Republican party, declared.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the safety of acetaminophen and the possible consequences that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also said it had "regularly reviewed the pertinent research and there is lacking reliable evidence that demonstrates a established connection between consuming paracetamol and autism."

Associations acting on behalf of physicians and health professionals concur.

ACOG has stated acetaminophen - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to manage pain and elevated temperature, which can create major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of research on the use of paracetamol in pregnancy, not a single reputable study has definitively established that the use of paracetamol in any stage of pregnancy results in neurological conditions in offspring," the group stated.

The lawsuit references latest statements from the previous government in arguing the drug is potentially dangerous.

Recently, the former president caused concern from public health officials when he advised expectant mothers to "resist strongly" not to take Tylenol when unwell.

The FDA then issued a notice that doctors should consider limiting the use of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has remains unverified.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who supervises the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to initiate "extensive scientific investigation" that would identify the cause of autism in a limited time.

But specialists cautioned that finding a unique factor of autism - considered by experts to be the consequence of a complex mix of inherited and surrounding conditions - would not be simple.

Autism is a type of enduring cognitive variation and condition that influences how persons perceive and engage with the surroundings, and is diagnosed using physician assessments.

In his legal document, the attorney general - who supports Trump who is campaigning for federal office - alleges the manufacturer and Johnson & Johnson "deliberately disregarded and tried to quiet the evidence" around paracetamol and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action attempts to require the firms "destroy any commercial messaging" that claims acetaminophen is secure for expectant mothers.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the grievances of a group of guardians of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who took legal action against the makers of acetaminophen in 2022.

A federal judge dismissed the legal action, stating investigations from the family's specialists was not conclusive.
