British Foreign Office has added eleven new countries to its travel warning roster about the risks of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The expanded warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, in response to multiple high-profile incidents such as the deadly death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being warned that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint solvent. It is not intended for ingestion.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.

However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.

Authorities' Guidance for Travellers

Authorities official the minister stated that every traveler should know the indicators of methanol contamination.

"When you are having drinks in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the official warned.
